Whether you’re an empty nester looking for a smaller space or you’ve realized that your family can benefit from a more compact living area, there are many reasons to downsize. Unfortunately, this move tends to require a bit more prep work than other types of relocations. As you consider factors such as eliminating unnecessary items and moving furniture into your new space, here are some helpful tips to consider.

5 Downsizing Tips to Follow Before a Move

1. Give Yourself Ample Time

Downsizing can be daunting, but it’s certainly doable with enough time. Start as early as possible—this will give you time to put thought into the items you truly want and need to keep. Don’t forget about furniture—with less living space, only plan on moving furniture that you truly have room for.

2. Establish Yes & No Piles

moving furnitureYou may have heard that you should create piles for items you’ll keep, those you’ll donate or sell, and those you’re unsure about. Yet, you’re better off taking a definitive approach when downsizing and eliminating the “maybe” pile altogether. This will prevent you from second-guessing your decisions.

3. Start With the Easiest Areas

Spaces like closets, attics, and garages are where most personal items are stored and are therefore the toughest to tackle. Instead, start with smaller, simpler areas that have fewer memories or emotions tied to them. A bathroom is a good place to start by getting rid of any nonessential towels, grooming tools, and toiletries.

4. Consider Your New Living Space

If your new home doesn’t have a garage, attic, home office, or other space you currently have, you’ll need to eliminate most of the items in those areas or find alternate places for them. For instance, if you have a large study with multiple bookcases, you might consider condensing your collection to one or two bookcases that you can display in the main living room. This will also make moving furniture simpler on the day of your relocation.

5. Sell or Pass Down Important Items

Many items you no longer need or want can be donated or sold at a garage sale. When it comes to higher-value or more meaningful items, however, think carefully about how you want to proceed. You might sell or pass these objects on to family members, for instance, to ensure they go to the right homes.
