The brakes get worn out over time, making it more difficult to slow down while driving and increasing the chance of an accident. Luckily, there are many ways to know when it’s time to get brake repairs. One of the easiest involves listening for these sounds.

3 Noises That Indicate You Need Brake Repairs

1. Thumping

Thumping most commonly comes from the front rims where most of the braking occurs. It typically results from warped brake rotors: you’ll hear a steady thumping accompanied by vibrations in the steering wheel.

If it’s not the rotors, it may be because of a buildup of brake pad materials on the rotor. Rather than requiring a full replacement, you can ask an auto repair technician to sand off the excess materials.

2. Squealing

Brake RepairSquealing indicates you need to get new brake pads. They wear down over time and should be replaced every 50,000 miles or so. When they’re completely worn down, a metal tab becomes exposed and rubs against the rotors, producing the squealing as a warning sign. If you put off the repairs, you risk damaging the brake rotors.

3. Dragging

Dragging occurs more in the back set of tires. When the caliper or drum doesn’t release completely after disengaging the brakes, the pad maintains contact with the brake mechanism, producing a dragging sound. Not only does this cause the parts to deteriorate faster, but it also reduces the vehicle’s performance and fuel efficiency.
