If you’re a relatively new coffee drinker, the variety of options can make ordering from a cafe confusing. There are many different kinds of coffee available, but the most popular types are espresso-based. Here are the main variants you’ll find at most coffee shops.

5 Different Kinds of Coffee

1. Espresso

This beverage is the building block and essential ingredient to all espresso-based coffees. Commonly referred to as a short black, an espresso is poured as a shot into a special cup. The process, which involves forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water through finely-ground coffee beans, was invented in Italy.

2. Cappuccino

The key to a good cappuccino is getting the correct proportions. This beverage is made with equal parts of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. It can be served hot or iced. Some cafes use cream instead of milk, and others flavor their cappuccinos with chocolate or cinnamon powder for added sweetness.

3. Caffe Latte

coffeeOften shortened to latte, this drink is similar to a cappuccino in that it contains espresso, steamed milk, and foam. However, the latte has different proportions. This drink is made with less espresso and much more milk. Due to this adjustment, it’s well-known for its sweetness. Like a cappuccino, it can be served iced or hot. Many coffee shops use steamed milk to create beautiful latte art.

4. Americano

The Americano, also known as a long black, is made with water instead of milk. Baristas pour a shot of espresso into a cup, then fill it to the top with hot water. While it may have a similar appearance and caffeine content to traditionally brewed black coffee, the Americano tends to carry a richer, fuller flavor.

5. Mocha

An excellent choice for beginners and coffee aficionados alike, a mocha is a blend of cappuccino and hot chocolate. This beverage is made from espresso, milk foam, and either cocoa powder and sugar or chocolate syrup. Sweet and served hot or cold, mochas are often topped with whipped cream and cinnamon or cocoa powder.
