Whether it’s an old inspection sticker or a decal you no longer want on your car’s window, it can be more challenging to remove than you may anticipate. Additionally, even though auto glass is designed with resilience in mind, it can still sustain chips and cracks if you go too far in your removal efforts. To get rid of a stubborn sticker safely, try the following tips.

How to Remove Old Decals From Auto Glass

1. Rubbing Alcohol

Saturate a paper towel in denatured alcohol and apply it to the sticker for about five minutes before slowly peeling it off. If the sticker starts to disintegrate and comes off in pieces, you may need to use a sharp box cutter razor blade to remove it. However, ensure the blade is clean, since any dirt or other particles on it may scratch the auto glass. Remove the sticker with the blade on an angle for the best results.

2. Ice

Place an ice pack over the sticker for up to six minutes to chill the adhesive, which can cause the decal to remain extra-stuck on a hot day. Remove the frozen sticker with your hands if you can, or rely on your razor blade.

3. Glass Cleaner

auto glassSpray glass cleaner on the decal and leave it for three to five minutes. Then, gently remove the sticker, which should start curling at the edges or sliding around. Again, use your box cutter razor blade for parts that won't budge.

4. Masking Tape

Wind a piece of masking tape around your hand, so the sticky side faces up. Then, place your hand on the auto glass decal and pull up to remove it. Repeat this process several times if the sticker comes off in pieces, and remove any leftover adhesive residue with glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol.

5. Cooking Oil

Lubricate the sticker with cooking oil, such as canola, sesame, or olive oil. Let the oil stay on the glass for three to five minutes to break down the adhesive before removing it. Then, use a paper towel to soak up the remaining oil and clean the auto glass with a warm, soapy mixture.
