In a climate like Alabama’s, air conditioning systems must put up with a lot. The soaring temperatures and fluctuating humidity levels put overwhelming demands on even the most robust units. As such, it’s not uncommon for them to break down, especially during the hottest time of year, when they're running at full capacity constantly. Here are some of the most common issues that warrant prompt air conditioner repair so you can keep your family cool all summer long.

3 Prevalent Problems That Require AC Repair

1. Low Refrigerant

AC units use refrigerant to lower the temperature. In its gaseous form, this coolant absorbs heat from the air. It then turns into a high-pressure liquid, which is flushed through the system so the heat can be released in the form of exhaust.

During installation, new AC units are sufficiently charged with refrigerant. Over time, though, levels will drop. Additional recharges can remedy the issue. If there happens to be a leak, however, refrigerant levels will drop rapidly. While a recharge will be in order, your HVAC contractor will also have to address the underlying cause of the leak to prevent the refrigerant from dropping as quickly in the future.

2. Clogged Drain Lines

air conditioner repairAs they cool the air, ACs produce condensation. In a properly functioning unit, this condensation is expelled through various drain lines and diverted away from the system’s electrical components. If a blockage were to occur, however, the water would flow back into the system. Not only will this hinder the AC’s performance, but it could also cause irreparable damage over time. Inspect your HVAC system periodically to ensure water is flowing uninhibited through the drain lines.

3. Broken Compressor Fan

Ideally, the compressor’s fan will last as long as the compressor itself. In reality, though, this isn’t always the case. Hardware can get knocked loose, the motor can fail, or overheating can damage various mechanical components.

If an issue with the fan develops, identifying it early could mean the difference between repairing it and having to replace it entirely. Some of the earliest signs of a fan problem include failing to start when the unit is turned on, not stopping when it’s turned off, and running intermittently.
