Ovarian cysts are small sacs of fluid or tissue that develop on or in an ovary. There are many different types of cysts, and they can result from several potential sources, such as a normal menstrual cycles, polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, and rarely, cancer. Being alert to the warning signs of ovarian cysts will help ensure prompt treatment by a gynecologist; below are three of the more common symptoms to watch for.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

1. Pelvic Pain

The ovaries are located on the lower right and lower left sides of the lower portion of the pelvis. Smaller cysts may produce no noticeable pain at all, but if they've grown in size, they will often produce discomfort in this region. The pain is typically consistent, an ongoing issue that lasts beyond one's normal menstrual period. You may feel it more significantly after exercise, strenuous physical activity, or sexual intercourse.

2. Abdominal Bloating

Though most women have smaller cysts, larger ones can distend the belly and take on the more traditional appearance of bloating. You may feel bloated as well, even when eating lightly or not at all, or there may be a sensation of heaviness in the belly. You might assume the swelling is weight gain, but if there have been no major changes to your usual diet and exercise regimen, and the swelling remains or grows larger, see a gynecologist.

3. Changes in Urinary Habits

It's not uncommon to feel a more frequent urge to urinate and then encounter trouble fully emptying the bladder, which gives the sensation of not being able to go when you feel you really need to. Bladder issues can be a symptom of anything from a urinary tract infection to polycystic ovarian syndrome, so always have this issue checked out by a gynecologist.
