While dentures are a replacement for natural teeth, they require the same level of care. Not only does proper maintenance keep your dentures looking their best, but it will also protect your mouth and extend your appliance’s lifespan. Below are four tips for caring for your dentures.

4 Steps to Denture Care

1. Remove Them at Night

Take out your dentures at night and soak them. If they dry out, they could become misshapen and uncomfortable. Use a specially designed cleanser to prevent harmful bacteria from growing, which could damage the gums.

2. Brush Once a Day

denturesRemove your dentures and brush them once a day. Use a denture-specific toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush to remove stains and prevent plaque and tartar buildup, which could irritate the gums. Rinse your mouth with mouthwash before reinserting the dentures. If you have remaining natural teeth, you should also brush them before putting your dentures back in.

3. Handle With Care

Dentures can bend or break easily, so handle them with caution. When you remove them, do so over a towel or basin of water to absorb the shock in case you drop them. When soaking them, keep them out of reach of children or pets and ensure the cleaning box is tightly closed.

4. Make Sure They Fit Well

Dentures should fit snugly and comfortably. If they’re loose, they could cause discomfort and fall out of your mouth. If anything feels off, schedule an appointment with your dentist so they can adjust the fit.
