2. Take a Test Drive 

To check the vehicle handling, drive on back roads, city streets, and highways. Make a note of any issues when accelerating, braking, cornering, and shifting gears. For example, odd noises, vibration in the steering column or brake pedal, and pulling could stem from suspension problems, transmission issues, or incorrect wheel alignment. 

3. Check the Vehicle History

Similar to a medical history chart, a vehicle history report will shed light on the overall condition and health of a car. Plug the vehicle identification number (VIN) into CARFAX®, AutoCheck®, or another online service that can find a detailed history based on a VIN or license plate number. The report should include the accident record, maintenance history, reported mileage, warranty details, and additional information that will affect the decision to buy.
