As the worst of winter’s weather comes to an end, it’s time to start thinking about spring home maintenance projects. At the top of that list should be inspecting and maintaining your home’s roof. Although most roofs last up to 20 years or longer, regular maintenance and inspections can prolong their life span. Even if you have a relatively new roof, staying on top of maintenance will keep it in good shape for years to come.

Important Spring Roof Maintenance Tips for Homeowners

1. Schedule an Inspection

First, conduct a visual inspection of the roof, looking for missing or broken shingles, mold growth, and rotting fascia. If you spot signs of trouble, schedule repairs right away. However, because not all signs of roof damage are immediately apparent, especially to the untrained eye, schedule a professional roof inspection as well.

2. Clean the Gutters

new roofOver the winter, gutters can fill with leaves, twigs, and other debris, making it harder for them to manage the water from spring rainstorms. Clean these channels to prevent clogs and check for damage. Heavy winter ice and snow can cause gutters to detach from your home. Additionally, cold followed by warm weather could cause or exacerbate cracks and leaks. A leaking gutter can then, in turn, contribute to roof or foundation issues.

3. Remove Leaves

If any leaves or pine needles have gathered on your roof, remove them in the spring. When this debris gathers on your roof, it can retain moisture, causing mold, rot, and other damage.

In the same vein, make sure that nearby trees are not encroaching over your roof. Swaying branches can scrape the protective coating off shingles, leaving your home vulnerable to damage and in need of a new roof much sooner than normal. Weakened branches can also break off and fall onto your home.
