The snow has finally melted, and temperatures are slowly climbing, which means the spring growing season is on its way. Carefully nurturing your lawn through the first few months of warm weather is key to growing lush, beautiful turf that will make your house the envy of the neighborhood. The tips below will help you grow the thick, beautiful, healthy grass you’ve always wanted.

How to Care for Grass in Spring

1. Water Carefully

At the beginning of the growing season, new turf doesn’t need much water. In fact, roots sometimes grow deeper and stronger in somewhat dry soil. When the grass stops popping back up after being walked on, go ahead and start your regular watering schedule.

2. Fill in the Bare Spots

turfEven the healthiest grass can develop a few bald spots during the winter. These bare patches are unsightly, but they also create an opening for weeds, which can quickly take over the lawn. To fill in empty spaces, throw down some grass seed or a piece of sod, then thoroughly irrigate the area.

3. Put Off Fertilizing

Fertilizers give your lawn a boost, but they also supercharge weed growth and lead to more frequent mowing. If you have cool-weather turf that stays green all year, fertilize in the fall. Warm-weather grasses do well if you wait until the fourth mowing to fertilize.

4. Attack Weeds Early

Dandelions, broadleaf, and other weeds will creep into every lawn, but they can be easy to control if you don’t let them get a foothold in your grass. Pull weeds as soon as they pop up, or use an organic herbicide from your local lawn care store.
