Every family should discuss what to do in case of an emergency. When it comes to fire preparations, everyone should know safety tips, the best escape route, and where to meet afterward. Fire damage restoration experts recommend talking to your family about the following tips.

3 Essential Steps to Take in Case of a Fire

1. Check the Exits

Even if your smoke detector has gone off, still alert everyone in the house that there is a fire, and it’s not a false alarm. As you try to find an exit, refrain from abruptly opening doors. Touch the doors with the back of your hand to see if it’s hot—never immediately grab the knobs. If a door feels warm, don't open it; there may be a fire directly behind it. Find another exit, such as an open window if you’re on the first floor.

Don't attempt to extinguish the fire yourself or retrieve valuables. Prioritize you and your family’s safety; valuables can always be replaced.

2. Stay Low to the Ground

Reduce the amount of smoke you breathe in by keeping your head low as you crawl to the nearest exit. If possible, cover your nose and mouth with a wet towel and breathe only through your nostrils.

3. Close the Doors

If it is safe to leave the room, close the exits tightly, including the windows. Doing so will prevent the fire from drawing more oxygen and spreading quickly.

Once you reach a safe area, call emergency hotlines. Never attempt to go back and recover your belongings.
