Sometimes, a child’s fever indicates an illness that should be examined and treated by a pediatrician. However, there are a few techniques parents can try to reduce a fever on the first night. To help alleviate your child’s discomfort, use the tips below.

3 Ways to Bring Down a Child’s Fever

1. Keep Your Child Cool

With their internal temperature rising, simply providing external relief can make a significant difference. Try giving them a lukewarm bath, but don’t use ice cubes or cold water, as this may cause shivering, which would only result in an even higher temperature.

When they get out of the bath after about 15 or 20 minutes, change them into light and airy clothes to help them regulate their body temperature. Consider placing ice packs beneath their armpits and a cold cloth on their head for about 10 minutes to give them quick relief as well.

2. Give Them Liquids

pediatricianWhatever method you choose for externally cooling your child’s body, make sure that you’re offering them ample fluids. Water is the best fluid, so try to give your little one at least four glasses a day.

Fevers cause sweating, which could lead to dehydration for your child. The better you keep them hydrated, the easier their body will handle the fever and infection, reducing their level of pain or discomfort while speeding their recovery as much as possible. If you suspect your child is dehydrated, take them to a pediatrician right away.

3. Provide Appropriate Medication

Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are both effective at reducing children’s fevers, but choose only one or the other. Combining children’s medicine could worsen the fever and damage their organs. Make sure to thoroughly read the labels for specific instructions on how frequently to administer the medication.

If your child is younger than three months, it’s best to take them to a pediatrician. Many over-the-counter medications could be dangerous for them at this age, so they should be administered only with professional advice.
