Every year, millions of people travel to Hawaii to enjoy its beautiful ocean. There is plenty to see and do, from observing the colorful marine life in the reef to surfing off the stunning coast. Follow these etiquette tips when exploring the ocean to protect the natural environment you’re there to enjoy.

Do:

Dispose of trash properly.

Never throw your trash in the ocean. It doesn’t decompose, and the marine life may eat it or get trapped in it and die.

Carry a trash bag with you, put all your waste in it, and carry it away for safe disposal at your hotel. If you see trash that someone else left behind, grab that as well. It’s always a good idea to leave a place better than you found it!

Use reef-safe sunscreen.

When so many people travel to Hawaii and wear this sunscreen in the water, the reefs die, which has long-term effects for the ocean and island residents. Do your part to prevent these consequences by using sunscreen labeled “reef-safe.”

Don't:

Take souvenirs.

Imagine if everyone who visited Hawaii took something natural with them—there wouldn’t be much left. Look at the rocks, coral, seashells, and other natural beauty, but don’t take it with you. Buy your souvenirs in the shops instead.

Disturb the wildlife.

When you’re in the ocean, you’re visiting the home of the wildlife. Disturbing them may result in negative impacts, like preventing them from eating or separating a mother from her offspring. Enjoy the wildlife from a distance.

Likewise, don’t stand on or touch the reef; the coral is living, and your weight may break or kill them.
