Your water well pump may provide you with free water, but this doesn’t mean you should be wasteful. Fresh water is a limited resource, so cutting back on your usage will reduce your carbon footprint and preserve the Earth’s precious resources. Start with the simple water-saving tips below in your home.

How to Conserve Water Usage

1. Replace Your Fixtures

Upgrading your fixtures to water-efficient ones is an easy task that will save a lot of water—and you’ll never need to think about it again. The Environmental Protection Agency has a program called WaterSense. If a fixture passes its regulations, it will have the WaterSense label on it. You can trust these products will provide water efficiency while giving you the flow you need.

2. Change Your Irrigation

Having sprinklers set up in your flower beds or using a hose to manually water your lawn wastes a lot of water. Much of it becomes runoff or evaporates before it hits the soil. Switch to drip irrigation in your flower beds, so your water well pump sends a smaller amount of water to be deposited directly at the root. For your lawn, schedule the sprinklers to run early in the morning just before the sun comes up. This will avoid water loss through evaporation.

3. Don’t Prerinse Dishes

Many people wash their dishes thoroughly—only without soap—before placing them in the dishwasher. Newer models are designed much better than older ones, so prerinsing is unnecessary. Scrape your extra food into the trash and put the dishes directly in the dishwasher.

4. Turn Off Faucets

There’s no need to run your faucets while you’re scrubbing your hands or brushing your teeth. Teach the entire family to turn off the taps while not actively using the water. You may be amazed at just how often you were running water straight down the drain.
