No homeowner wants to deal with water damage. Along with seeping through your windows and increasing the risk of mold, heavy rainwater can wreak havoc on your home’s roofing, siding, and foundation. Keep your house and family safe from water damage by following these three tips.

How to Reduce Water Damage in Your Home

1. Inspect Your Roofing

Since your roof is your home’s first line of defense against rain and snow, it’s important to inspect it regularly. Make sure none of the shingles or tiles are loose, missing, or damaged. If they are, or if the roof is more than 20 years old, it’s time for a replacement. In addition, have the roof professionally cleaned if you notice any algae, lichen, or moss buildup, as these substances can decrease your roof’s ability to withstand harsh weather.

2. Update Your Windows

roofingWhen rain and snow seep through your windows, the moisture can damage the window frames and surrounding drywall. When not promptly taken care of, moisture can also cause other issues such as mold and fungal growth. Regularly inspect your windows and replace them if they’re over 10 years old or show signs of wear and tear, as old or damaged windows are particularly vulnerable to water seepage.

3. Clean Your Gutters

Clogged gutters can’t properly direct rainwater away from your home. At least twice a year, ideally once in the spring and once in the fall, use a ladder, hose, and trowel to remove leaves and other debris from your gutters.

If the gutters are sagging or cracked, consider replacing them, as a damaged gutter won’t provide the protection your home needs. Also, make sure the downspouts direct water 5 to 10 feet away from your home.
