Sneakers withstand a lot of use in all types of terrain. Because of that, they collect considerable dirt and grime. Also, frequent contact with sweaty feet can leave shoes with a foul odor. The most convenient way to clean them would seem to be to toss them in the washing machine. However, you might worry that it could make for a clunky load and damage the shoes. Here are some laundry care tips for cleaning sneakers in the washer.

How to Clean Sneakers in the Washer

1. Only Launder the Right Shoes

Laundry careYou must be careful which shoes you launder. Leather, suede, or faux-leather sneakers shouldn't be submerged in water and could stain or start deteriorating if placed in a washer. Similarly, you need to be gentle with sneakers covered with rhinestones, bedazzling, or other decorations. Shoes with plain canvas uppers, on the other hand, can withstand the wash cycle if you take the right laundry care precautions.

2. Pre-clean the Sneakers

For the best results, remove caked-on dirt and grime before tossing the shoes into the washer. Use an old toothbrush or a clean rag with soapy water to scrub off stubborn stains. Remove the laces and soak them in bleach or a color-fast bleach solution. Also, take out the insoles before laundering.

3. Wash on Gentle Cycle

Pre-cleaning lets you use the shortest and gentlest wash cycle, which limits wear and tear on the shoes. You should also use only cold water and a little bit of gentle laundry care soap since hot water can cause the sneaker glue to loosen. Place sneakers in a mesh bag to protect them and add three or four heavy towels as padding.

4. Air Dry

After laundering, let the sneakers air dry for at least 24 hours. Place them outside or in front of a fan to ensure airflow. Do not use a dryer, since the heat can warp and damage the shoes.
