Your ice maker is a frequently used item in your business, so it needs an appropriate amount of attention. Keeping it sanitary and well-maintained ensures you’re always serving and enjoying clean ice. Fortunately, taking care of ice machines is a simple process if you follow these tips.

How to Clean an Ice Maker

1. Remove the Ice to Start Fresh

When you’re ready to clean your commercial ice maker, make sure all the parts are accessible and easy to clean. Start by emptying it of ice and any excess water. If you don’t want to complete this task by hand, turn the unit off and wait for the ice to melt and drain away. Once it’s dry, you can begin.

2. Clean the Water System

Most ice makers come with an automatic cleaning feature that focuses on the water system. This can be initiated by pressing a button labeled “clean” or “wash.”

If this is your first time cleaning the unit, refer to your owner’s manual. Once you’ve initiated the self-cleaning process, wait for it to complete to flush out the water system.

3. Disassemble & Clean Parts

Follow your owner’s manual to identify how to disassemble major parts, such as the valves and evaporator plate. Submerge these parts in a cleaning solution/water mixture, per manufacturer’s directions, to clean them.

4. Rinse Parts

Once the parts have been thoroughly cleaned, rinse them with cold water until there’s no soap or solution left. Rinsing each part ensures it’s completely free of cleaner, which you don’t want to be mixed into your new batch of ice.

5. Wipe Down the Exterior

Don’t forget to clean the exterior of your ice maker. Use a wet cloth to wipe down the front, back, and sides to eliminate any dirt, oil, and debris. Once you’re finished, the machine can create or be filled with a fresh batch of ice that will soon be ready to serve.
