When you take your vehicle in for an oil change, the mechanic might ask if you prefer regular or synthetic oil. Many newer models of cars require synthetic oil, but older vehicles can generally use either. If you’re curious about the difference between the two, learn about the pros and cons of each below.

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil, also known as mineral oil, is a more common and cost-effective solution than synthetic oil. It works well in low-mileage models that don’t require synthetic oil and is better for older and high-mileage engines because it flows slowly to provide more lubrication.

Because of its lower price tag and availability, regular oil is often used in new cars fresh out of the factory.

Synthetic Oil

Synthetics are made from higher quality oils that have been refined to remove impurities. They provide lubrication for longer periods, so your engine enjoys better protection and remains cleaner while you can have less frequent oil changes. They also flow better in extreme temperatures.

On the other hand, they’re almost double the price of regular oils and shouldn’t be used in aging vehicles that have only ever used conventional oils.
