When your child is starting junior tennis, you may be unsure of the unwritten rules they should follow for respecting the competition and the court. Players must keep a few courtesies in mind while learning the game. Below is a quick guide to help your family master this decorum.

Tennis Etiquette for Beginners

1. Tell the Truth

If the ball is in play and goes out of bounds, the player should speak up. Opponents must retain their integrity and avoid cheating to improve and get ahead. Typically, if an athlete isn’t 100% sure that the ball crossed the line, it was inbounds.

2. State the Score

Before serving, your child must state the score so that the opponent can hear. This practice helps keep track of the points and ensures both parties are on the same page. Make sure to say it loudly and clearly.

3. Clarify Once

If the competitor says the ball was out of bounds, your child can ask them about it once. Asking for clarification twice is considered rude behavior. Trust the opponents’ judgment or always have a referee to offer a third party opinion.

4. Keep it Fun

As a junior tennis parent, you may want to coach from the sidelines. Instead, keep your comments fun and lighthearted to encourage your children to carry on playing the sport. They may appreciate receiving feedback after the match, but spend your time cheering and being encouraging while they’re playing.

5. Practice Fair Warmups

Junior tennis players typically have five minutes together to warm up before a match. Instead of serving repeatedly, this is an excellent chance for opponents to test each others’ skill levels and styles by volleying back and forth. Most players move slower than normal during this practice round, so think of this session as an opportunity for your child to read the opponent and get their limbs moving.
