Tacos are the go-to dish for many people at their favorite Mexican restaurant. If you love the familiar crunch of the shell and the delicious fillings that bring it all together, then you might be intrigued to learn a few fun facts about this popular meal.

Let’s Taco ‘Bout Tacos

1. Taco Parties Go Way Back

While it’s customary to serve this crunchy treat at parties in the modern world, it turns out the trend has been a favorite for centuries. Legend tells of Hernan Cortes, a 16th-century conquistador from Spain, who was introduced to this food by the Aztecs. These Native Americans would often gather together to enjoy this dish as a group.

tacos2. The Largest of Them All

These days, people can order multiples of their favorite style if they want to get their fill of tacos. But in 2003, the largest one ever was created in Mexico.

Made with a flour shell, it contained grilled steak, onions, and coriander, and weighed in at some 1,654 pounds. It’s listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for its enormity.

3. American Tacos Began in Texas

Mexican food was often sold in cities like Los Angeles and San Antonio in the early 20th century. Historians find the earliest mention of it in a 1905 Texas newspaper, which referenced a group known as the Chili Queens. These street vendors were known for selling Mexican food during festival seasons.

4. There’s a Holiday Named After Them

For those who can’t get enough of this longtime favorite, join in on National Taco Day on October 4. It honors the millions of tacos that are consumed in America every year, along with the many different variations of the dish. Celebrate by experimenting with different flavors and condiments.
