Taking your child to a pediatric dentist is an important step to maintain their budding smile. With the first appointment booked, you might wonder how it will go. The following guide will prepare you for a positive visit.

A Brief Guide to Your Child’s First Dental Visit

When should I bring my child to the dentist for the first time?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends taking your child to the dentist when their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. After that, you likely won't need to return until their second birthday, at which point the pediatric dentist will recommend your child visit every six months.

What can I expect from the first visit?

pediatric dentistThe first visit to the pediatric dentist is mainly about getting your child comfortable with the environment and learning how to care for their teeth. The visit will include an exam of their teeth, jaws, bite, gums, and oral tissues. The dentist will teach you proper cleaning techniques, including gentle brushing with water or a small amount of toothpaste.

How can I make the visit more pleasant for my child?

To avoid bringing a cranky child to the dentist, schedule a morning appointment. With an infant, you won't be able to explain the importance of a dental visit, but you can do so with older children.

For infants, bring their favorite toys to the visit and do your best to make them comfy in the room. Ask friends or family for a pediatric dentist who will be sure to make your child smile; don't be afraid to shop around until you find one who does.

How can I care for my child’s teeth at home?

Before your child has teeth, keep their gums healthy by cleaning them with a damp cloth.  After your child’s first visit, you can start brushing their teeth with water or a tiny bit of toothpaste.

Once they’re 3 and able to spit out toothpaste, it’s safe to use about a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste. When your child is around 6 or 7, you can teach them how to care for their teeth on their own.
