Once you get your learner's permit, it's a good idea to drive in a variety of scenarios before taking your driver's test. In addition to navigating inner city and suburban streets, practice driving on the interstate outside of your town to get the hang of the faster speeds and lane changing that's required. If you're ready to take this step, learn more about defensive driving on busy highways below.

Your Guide to Highway Driving

1. Change Lanes Safely

Before changing lanes on the highway, always check your blindspots, or the spaces your mirrors can't reach. Look over your shoulder to make sure no vehicles are coming in the next lane, and use your blinker to indicate you're moving over, just as you would on regular city roads.

2. Leave Space Between Vehicles

defensive driving

The speed limit on highways is much higher than regular city streets. As a result, you'll need more time to stop in the event of traffic buildups, obstructions, or accidents in your path. In ideal conditions, you must leave at least three seconds between your vehicle and those in front of you. Under less idea conditions (e.g. inclement weather), you need more space.

3. Minimize Distractions

Accidents can happen in a split second at interstate speeds, so prioritize defensive driving by minimizing distractions. Keep your music at a reasonable volume, and program your GPS before you get on the road. Additionally, use apps that prevent you from texting while driving and automatically send away messages to people who try to contact you.

4. Stay in the Right Lane

As a general rule, the left lane is for passing, and the right lane is for cruising. Once you get onto the highway, move to the rightmost lane so you'll remain out of the way of the faster and more aggressive drivers. In three or more lanes, frequently the middle lane (of the three) is the best place to be, as you leave room for faster traffic in the left lane, and room for vehicles to enter into and exit from the right lane.
