New drivers have a lot to think about when it comes to practicing roadway safety. In addition to staying alert behind the wheel, they must also be mindful of their vehicle’s condition. Whether you’re a new driver yourself or have one in the family, here are a few important auto maintenance tips to keep in mind.

An Auto Maintenance Guide for New Drivers

1. Check Your Tires Regularly

All drivers should check both their tire pressure and tread to ensure proper traction and handling.

Use the penny test to check the tread level once every few months. Place a penny face-down in the groove of your tire. If space is visible above Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires.

Check the pressure once a month by using a gauge. Fill the tires according to your car’s manual and the tire manufacturer’s specifications.

2. Schedule Oil Changes

Frequent oil changes ensure there’s enough clean oil to prevent engine damage.

The ideal oil change schedule typically falls between 7,500 and 10,000 miles, but may vary from one vehicle to the next. The frequency will also depend on factors such as your driving habits and the type of oil used.

Consult your owner’s manual and your auto maintenance team for a precise recommendation.

3. Top Off Other Fluids

4. Have Your Tires Rotated

Tire rotation promotes an even distribution of wear, as tires in different positions will lose their tread at varying rates. Aim to have your tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles.

You can also ask your mechanic to make sure they’re balanced, which can promote even wear distribution as well as a smoother driving experience.

5. Check Your Brakes

Some brake pads can last up to 50,000 miles, while others need replacing in half as many miles. Watch for signs of brake wear, such as reduced responsiveness.

You can also visually check your pads. If they’re less than a quarter of an inch thick, it’s time for new ones.
