Home and commercial floors take serious beatings day in and day out. General maintenance can usually keep dirt and debris away, but if you want to truly restore your concrete and stone surfaces, floor grinding is often the solution. This floor care equipment does all the prep work for both revitalizing or for replacing flooring. Below are all the details you need to know to get started.

Understanding How Floor Grinding Works

About Floor Grinders

A grinder is a piece of floor care equipment that’s used to repair damaged concrete and stone. Issues can range from a rough surface and a weak shine to light cracking from foundation shifting. Floor grinders use one of several rotating discs to grind down the concrete surface. They can also be used to remove glue and other debris that has hardened on the floor.

There are two types of grinders: wet and dry. Dry grinders use a vacuum system to collect the dust produced during the grinding process. This is useful because the silica particles in this material can be hazardous to the lungs. A wet grinder uses water to lubricate this piece of floor care equipment and to also keep the dust from kicking up.

Once you’ve spot-treated concrete, you can easily apply a sealcoat, stain, or finish to restore it. This also applies if you’re completely removing the upper surface to pour a new concrete layer and finish.

Tips for Use

You’ll also want to purchase the proper kinds of grinding discs. Coarse-grit discs—those with fewer yet larger granules—break down the surface first. Fine-grit discs—those with more small granules—smooth and finish the surface.

To get an even treatment, move the grinder from side to side; circular motions will leave swirl patterns. You can improve the grinder’s ability to polish the flooring by tossing down a layer of play sand. If you’re removing carpeting adhesive, it’s wise to first soak it with water. This will loosen the bond so the grinder can remove it easier.

You may need to perform some trial and error with the different grit discs until you find the perfect combination to achieve your goals. Stay patient and always wear gloves, safety goggles, pants, and closed-toe shoes when operating the machine.
