National Bluebird Society Conference & Bird Festival – Hosted by Bluebirds Across Nebraska - Kearney, Nebraska

The North American Bluebird Society (NABS) will hold their annual conference March 11 -15 in Kearney, Nebraska. The NABS conference and bird festival is being hosted by Bluebirds Across Nebraska (BAN) during the same time as one of nature’s greatest wonders, the migration of more than 500,000 Sandhill Cranes stopping on the central Platte River where these birds will spend six weeks  on their journey to the sub-Arctic, Arctic, and Siberian nesting grounds.

The conference and birding festival includes morning and evening viewing of Sandhill Cranes from blinds along the Platte River. Attendees of the conference and festival will have field trip options as well to view prairie chickens, geese and waterfowl in the rainwater basin at Funk lagoon, a prairie dog village, and Harlan County Reservoir where Bald Eagles, Cormorants, and White Pelicans abound.

Prairie culture tours about life in Nebraska will also be offered with visits to G.W. Frank Museum of Nebraska History and Culture, the Great Platte River Road Archway Museum, a must see, and the Museum of Nebraska Art.

The conference on February 13 & 14 at the Holiday Inn in Kearney on South 2nd Avenue is funded in part by the Nebraska Humanities Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. Enjoy nationally renowned guest speakers, birding workshops, educational exhibits, live and silent auctions, raffles, vendors, and have fun socializing with new and old birding friends. Dinner on Friday and the Saturday night banquet will include a cash bar and live entertainment by Minnesota humorist Al Batt and music by Ron Cisar.

Event speakers are certain to entertain and educate attendees. Speakers include wildlife photographer and author Stan Tekiela, writer and artist from Bird Watchers Digest Julie Zickefoose, NABS President Bernie Daniel, Canadian photographer and biologist Myrna Pearman, and Iain Nicolson Audubon Center Rowe Sanctuary’s director Bill Taddicken. There will also a second show performed by Al Batt and his hilarious nature-related story telling skills.
