With summer on the horizon, bikers around the country are eager to get pedaling again. However, as the seasons change, so should your bike riding habits. Here are just a few of the ways you can stay safe behind the handlebars this summer.

3 Bike Safety Tips for Summer

1. Shorten Your Rides

During the fall and spring, you might have gotten used to biking for several miles, on various types of terrain. However, the summer months don’t offer the same breezy, temperate weather. Trying to tackle the same distance could lead to heat exhaustion, sunburns, and muscle strains. Therefore, start your summer biking season with shorter trips, and try to work up to your previous standards.

2. Stay Hydrated

bikeWhile it takes much less effort than walking the same distance, biking in the heat is still an intense form of exercise. As you sweat, your body loses moisture to keep you cool, increasing the risk of dehydration. To avoid feeling lightheaded or even fainting, pack water in your bike’s cup holder for every ride. If you start feeling dizzy on a ride, pull off to the side and find some shade to rest in.

3. Watch Out for Children

With school out for the season, there will be kids playing outdoors at all times of the day. Therefore, you’ll have to keep an eye out for children regardless of school zones. When passing through neighborhoods, or near parks or recreational centers, double-check for kids before turning a corner or riding through an intersection. In the evening, use blinking lights to make your bike more visible, and a bell to announce your presence at short notice.
