In the winter, an unheated garage will become frigid and unpleasant. However, you can take steps to enhance your home heating system so that you can reclaim the space for your workshop, workouts, and other hobbies. Here are a few methods for keeping your garage warm.

How to Heat Your Garage In the Winter

1. Install a Heating System

Consider the size of your garage and your current home heating system before you decide on the best option. Although you might be tempted by a portable heating system because they’re affordable and easy to tuck away, they may not be powerful enough to heat your whole garage.

If you already have a furnace or boiler, consider extending the existing system to include your garage. Alternatively, you might consider adding a forced-air unit, a ductless heating system, or a range of other options.

2. Insulate Garage Door

On particularly cold nights, you may even find frost on the inside of your door. However, with proper insulation, you can make the garage 10-12 degrees warmer. For extra warmth, consider insulating the walls and ceiling as well.

3. Find & Eliminate Drafts

In addition to having thin doors, garages tend to be drafty. Often, garage doors aren’t snug in their frames, leaving gaps for air to enter and escape. You can use weather stripping to seal these gaps.

Windows are often another trouble spot. If yours are particularly drafty, apply shrink film to the inside surfaces of your windows. After placing it on, you’ll need to seal it by using a tool such as a hairdryer.
