Your dog should have a wellness visit done every year at your veterinarian clinic, even if they seem to be in great health. In order to continue being able to dispense heartworm and oral flea and tick prevention, Alabama State Law requires your pet to be examined once yearly. Monitoring their health will be key to keeping them happy and strong for many years to come. Below, learn what to expect at this routine appointment and how to prepare for it.

What to Expect

Your veterinarian will examine your dog and ask you some questions. They’ll take some routine measurements, such as their weight, pulse, and their temperature. They will inspect the coat and skin for rashes, lumps, or hair loss. They’ll check inside the ears and eyes for swelling, discoloration, or discharge. They will also check the teeth for signs of gum disease. If there is plaque buildup, they may recommend a professional cleaning. They’ll check all the paws and limbs, from head to toe, for anything unusual.

They’ll ask you about your dog’s sleeping, eating, and exercise habits. If your dog is due for a vaccination, they can provide it. They may recommend further testing if something is unusual such as a test for feces, urine, or blood.

How to Prepare

veterinarian clinicIf you are heading to a veterinarian clinic for the first time, they will need your dog’s medical records. Either bring the records yourself or give them the contact information for your last veterinarian before your appointment so they can call them. Think about whether there’s anything unusual you want to mention to your vet. Has your pup recently seemed unusually gassy, had abnormal stools, or stopped eating? You can call ahead and mention these concerns. They may recommend bringing something with you, such as a urine sample for testing.
