As you approach the end of high school, taking the SAT is an essential step in preparing for college applications. The math portion can be intimidating for many students, but learning more about what will be on the exam can help you tailor your studies and math tutoring to prepare. See what you should be studying with this helpful guide.

What Does the SAT Math Section Test?

Algebra & Graphing

The committee that creates the SAT has named this category the "Heart of Algebra." It focuses on your ability to interpret, graph, and solve linear equations, functions, and inequalities. This could include word problems and solving systems of linear equations. You'll need to be able to solve for variables using multiple steps, and select the correct graph of a given equation.

Nonlinear Expressions

Math TutoringThis section, called "Passport to Advanced Math," deals with quadratic equations and exponential expressions. Once again, it includes word problems. Be ready to use more complex methods of solving equations, such as factoring, and translating graphs back into equations.

Problem Solving & Data Analysis

This section is about analyzing information from graphs and tables. It also includes questions about ratios, rates, percentages, and data spreads. You'll be expected to read and understand sets of data and draw conclusions from them.

Additional Topics

The three categories above make up the majority of the SAT's math section, so you should focus on them first. However, if you have a solid grasp of those topics, you can also cover the other skills that may make up the last 10% of the test. These are mostly geometry and simple trigonometry questions. You'll have a reference sheet of many basic geometrical formulas available, but your math tutoring should still address these skills to help you answer the questions quickly since the SAT is timed.
