3 Essential Tips for Healthy & Happy Feet, Norwich, Connecticut

Your feet are responsible for supporting all of your body weight and keeping you moving. Health issues with the feet can therefore cause mobility problems, foot pain, and discomfort throughout the body. Thankfully, you can largely avoid issues by using the following advice.

A Basic Foot Care Guide

1. Choose the Right Shoes

The right shoes are essential, especially if you’re on your feet for most of the day. Avoid tight sizes that put too much pressure on your toes, as this can lead to blisters, corns, calluses, or ingrown nails. Your footwear also shouldn’t be too loose, as this can impact your gait and cause discomfort. Have your feet measured by a professional to ensure proper fit.

Look for options that include ample arch support. If you feel foot pain along the bottom of the foot after a long day, you may want to see a podiatrist to have custom orthotics made; these will fit the curve of your foot to provide the support you need.

2. Take a Load Off

foot painEven in the right shoes, standing or walking for hours can lead to foot pain and swelling. Sit down when you can, even if it’s just for a minute or two. If you’ve had a particularly long day, stretch them out or roll your soles against a manual massage ball. Icing your feet can also soothe soreness.

If you exercise frequently, make sure you practice proper form. Hitting the wrong part of your foot on your stride can cause discomfort or injury.

3. Care for Your Nails

Trim the nails straight across, rather than curving in at the edges. Don’t cut them too short. Both of these tips will help you avoid ingrown toenails.

Clip them at least once every 6 to 8 weeks. Never share your pedicure implements with anyone else; buy your own set and keep it to yourself. This prevents the spread of bacteria or fungi.
