If you own or recently purchased an older home, some of its security components may be older than you think. Many homeowners may not realize the capability of fire alarms to detect smoke may fail with age. If you feel your smoke- or heat-detecting device may be nearing the end of its life, consider this list of signs it may be time for a replacement.

How to Spot an Aging Fire Alarm

1. More Than 10 Years Old

The National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing a smoke alarm every 10 years. If you're unsure how old your alarm is, remove its casing and look for the date of manufacture on the back of the unit.

2. Doesn't Respond to Smoke

Before replacing an alarm, press and hold the test button to ensure the alert still sounds. You can also purchase a smoke detector test spray from a local home improvement store to assess function.

3. Goes Off for No Apparent Reason

A chirping alarm is an indication that batteries need replacing. An alarm that sounds off without the presence of smoke is often a sign that it's nearing the end of its life. Whether the result of old age or a fault in the unit, if an alarm continues to emit short beeps or sounds false alerts even with fresh batteries, it's time to replace your device.
