Mediation offers an alternative method of divorce that allows spouses to work together to determine how issues are resolved. Instead of divorce attorneys for each side communicating and negotiating, these responsibilities are left to the spouses. Here are three tips for successful divorce mediation.

How to Approach Divorce Mediation

1. Communicate Actively, Clearly, & Civilly

The mediation process is only effective when both sides can come together and state their needs clearly. Know what you need and don't be afraid to ask for it. Be willing to have a conversation about these needs to ensure your spouse understands your position.

Be open to negotiating and compromising, and be comfortable making your own decisions. Enter the mediation room with an open mind and remember the bigger picture. For instance, if you have kids, they should be the highest priority.

2. Take Care of Yourself

Divorce can be a stressful experience, and coming face to face with your soon-to-be-ex can be nerve-wracking. For these reasons, take care of yourself throughout the mediation. If you need to take a break, ask for one. If you need clarification on an issue, request it.

Aim to be as physically comfortable as you can be throughout the meeting. Dress nicely but comfortably and bring along a water bottle or a cup of coffee or tea. It’s harder to achieve a favorable outcome without some basic self-care throughout this process.

3. Consult Others as Needed

You may also need to reach out to your accountant, childcare provider, or other professionals for input, and you have every right to do this. The end goal is to feel confident in the decisions made and conclusions reached; if others can help you get there, call on them.
