One of the most common food allergies is lactose intolerance, or the inability to digest dairy products properly. This is a common food intolerance and is found in up to 65% of adults and children. Consider the following guide for common signs of lactose intolerance.

Common Symptoms of Lactose Intolerance

1. Diarrhea

Many issues can cause persistent diarrhea, but one of the first factors to investigate is food allergies. Many adults don’t have the enzymes and bacteria necessary to digest lactose, so it remains in the colon and is fermented rather than being reabsorbed.  Lactose intolerance can cause diarrhea by increasing the amount of water in the colon and stool. Try eliminating dairy from your diet for a few weeks and note any change to your stool.

2. Constipation

Although much less common than diarrhea, constipation can affect some individuals. It is caused by the build-up of methane gas in the colon, a byproduct of the fermentation of lactose. Methane may slow the processing time of food through the intestines, leading to constipation. Like with diarrhea, constipation may have many causes, but looking at food allergies is an excellent place to start in dealing with symptoms.

3. Stomach Pain, Gas, & Bloating

food-allergies St. Louis, MOStomach cramps, bloating, and nausea are also common symptoms of lactose intolerance. As the microflora in your intestines ferments the lactose that cannot be digested,  gasses form in the gut. This can lead to bloating, pain, and flatulence. The amount of dairy necessary to cause this reaction is unique to the individual. Some people can take special digestive enzymes before a meal that contains dairy and be fine, while others will need to avoid dairy products altogether.

4. Secondary Symptoms

Most symptoms of lactose intolerance are gut-related, but many people report secondary symptoms such as headache, fatigue, joint pain, bladder issues, and eczema. Some of these symptoms may be caused by an actual food allergy to cow’s milk, which can cause rashes, eczema, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis. It is triggered by cow’s milk only and is more common in children.
