Chinese food is a popular option for many American diners. From white rice to noodles, this cuisine offers something for everyone. When visiting a restaurant, it’s crucial to practice etiquette to ensure the best experience. Below are a few do’s and don’ts to bear in mind when you go for Chinese cuisine.

Do:

Use chopsticks.

Since it’s customary for the Chinese to eat with chopsticks, try to use them when dining at their restaurant. Start by positioning one of the chopsticks between your fingers as you would a pencil. Place the second chopstick in the opening between your thumb and index finger. Maneuver the two chopsticks like a tong to pick up your food, using your ring finger to stabilize the second chopstick.

Try the bestsellers.

Chinese foodBestsellers are enjoyed by most people, which means there is a high chance you’ll enjoy them, too. However, if you want to try a new dish with protein, ask the waitstaff to recommend a popular option with chicken as the main ingredient. If you like sweet and savory, try general Tso’s chicken or kung pao chicken if you want a hot and spicy meal.

Don’t:

Mix consistencies up.

Like most cuisines, an excellent Chinese meal requires balance. For instance, a saucy dish needs something dry, fried, or roasted, to offset its moistness. Having two meals with similar texture and consistency can be off-putting to your palate. Order a variety of Chinese food with different main ingredients, so opt to have an assortment of meat, vegetables, and rice on the table.

Neglect ordering sauces.

Part of what makes Chinese food so appetizing is the sauces used to eat each meal. Soy sauce is a Chinese food staple. It has a salty taste that balances out most meals on the menu.

For appetizers like dumplings and spring rolls, duck sauce may be your best option. This orange translucent dipping sauce uses apricot or plums as its main ingredient, adding a sweet taste to your meal. Ask the waitstaff about other delicious options like oyster or hot sauce.
