Braces are orthodontic devices that straighten teeth and help a person achieve a bright, even smile. Because they affix directly to the surface of your enamel, food and plaque can easily accumulate behind braces, which makes proper cleaning and care essential for your oral health. Below, discover a few tips for maintaining your braces.

How to Care for Your Braces

1. Use the Right Toothbrush

Some types of toothbrushes are more effective at cleaning braces than others. A brush with soft bristles or an electric toothbrush is best able to access the tight spots between braces and teeth and the nooks and crannies of the orthodontics themselves.

You can also supplement one of these brushes with an interdental brush. An interdental brush head is small and spindle-like, with bristles covering all sides of the head; they fit easily between braces and teeth for efficient food and plaque removal.

2. Maintain Daily Flossing

It is crucial to floss at least once a day—ideally before bedtime. The additional mouth-gear means there are more opportunities for food to get stuck on and between the teeth and along the gumline.

But utilizing traditional floss can be a hassle; the strand breaks with little effort and may not be able to get into the deeper recesses. Instead, use a water flosser, which injects a powerful stream of water to dislodge any trapped buildup.

3. Rinse With Mouthwash

The swishing action, combined with the product's antiseptic properties, will help wash away food particles and kill bacteria, keeping your whole mouth cleaner. And it will freshen your breath, too.
