You rely on your auto battery to supply power to your car. While, in some unfortunate cases, you will realize there is a problem when your car won’t turn on at all, there are warning signs of imminent battery failure you should be on the lookout for. These include dim headlights, backfiring, a clicking noise when you try to turn the ignition, and the need to apply gas to get the car to start. The following guide looks at some of the possible causes of these issues.

What's Wrong With Your Auto Battery?

1. It Drains Easily

A car battery will drain if you left a light on or some other system running that caused the car to lose power overnight. Cars left undriven for long periods may also have this problem.

A battery that gets easily drained could also be a sign of old age. Typically, these auto components last about five years. However, they can wear out quicker if they're corroded, kept in extreme temperatures, or used for frequent short trips.

2. Corroded or Loose Contacts

Auto BatteryThe contacts connect your battery to your vehicle; this is also where you would connect cables to jumpstart the car. If the connections come loose, current can't flow through them reliably and if they're covered in rust, that also blocks the current.

Check these connections; if they're dirty, scrub them with vinegar, lemon juice, or a solution of water and baking soda. Then tighten the clamps holding the cables in place.

3. Parasitic Drains

Sometimes, a part of your vehicle's electrical system is still drawing power even when it should be turned off. This can include the headlights or various electronic systems.

Use a test light or meter to check whether any current is flowing when the car should be powered down. If so, you need repairs for your vehicle or you can connect it to a trickle charger when not in use.
