While showers and thunderstorms aren’t a big deal for most homeowners, these common occurrences can affect the quality of your swimming pool and even cause damage. If you know that inclement weather is on its way, however, there are a few steps you can take before and after the storm to reduce the harm done. Here are the top swimming pool maintenance tips for stormy weather.

How to Maintain & Prepare Pools for Storms

1. Turn Equipment Off

Torrential rainfall can potentially find its way into electrical pool components, causing serious damage. Shut off the circuit breakers to all electrical equipment, including the filter, pump, motor, heater, light fixtures, chlorinator, and control system. This will protect your equipment and prevent electrical issues that may arise from water damage.

2. Clean Up the Area

The more objects you have sitting outside your home, the higher the risk of heavy winds blowing your belongings away or wreaking havoc on your home, yard, and pool. Flying furniture and other large objects can be particularly dangerous. Bring all free-standing items, such as lounge chairs, tables, umbrellas, and toys, inside before the storm begins.

3. Don’t Drain

You may be tempted to remove some water from your pool in anticipation of heavy rainfall, but this is ill-advised. Rain causes water levels below the ground to rise, placing an unusual amount of pressure up through the bottom of your swimming pool. When there is not enough water in the pool to keep it weighed down, the pressure can push your pool out of the ground. Additionally, water offers a layer of protection against flying debris.

4. Remove Debris

Look for damage and clean up leaves, branches, and other debris around your yard before you put the furniture back out to ensure it doesn’t end up in your pool. Skim out as much debris from the water as you can to reduce contamination and prevent staining. No amount of skimming can completely clean your pool after a storm, so turn the filter back on when the water looks relatively clear.

5. Balance Water Chemistry

There are several elements that can disrupt your pool water’s pH, including heavy rain. Adjusting water chemistry is a critical part of swimming pool maintenance, so test and balance the pH level after every storm. A reading above 7 means your water is alkaline, while below 7 indicates acidity. The water should remain between a neutral 7 and 7.6 at all times.
