If you have a piece of equipment that relies on a motor, it's obvious when the motor burns out completely, as the machine will stop working. However, you can also often tell when this is going to happen in advance. When you notice the following signs of trouble, schedule prompt electric motor repairs to avoid a breakdown.

When Should You Take Your Motor to a Qualified Electric Motor Repair Facility ?

1. Heat

Overheating is one cause of motor failure. If the motor doesn't have enough airflow to cool, the building heat will damage the insulation around the winding. If your device feels hot to the touch when it's running, make sure it has plenty of space and clean out any vents. If the motor has been over greased, the grease will flow onto the winding blocking the airflow.  You may need electrical work to correct the problem.

2. Excessive Vibration

electric motor repairsMotors naturally make a small amount of noise and vibration, but that sound shouldn’t get louder or change. Vibration or rattling might mean the motor is out of balance or hitting its enclosure. If this is the case, there may be mechanical issues such as failing bearings or bearing enclosure.  Dynamically balancing the rotor may also be necessary.  Having these issues addressed by a qualified electric motor facility may reduce the need for more expensive electric motor repairs in the future.

3. Damaged Rotor Bars

A less common problem is damage to rotor bars.  The rotor bars help control the current and magnetic field within the device, ultimately making the motor move. When some of the bars are damaged, this can make the motor run less efficiently. You may be able to see cracks or scratches on the rotor bars, though an electric motor repair technician can also identify less obvious damage using dye or other techniques.
