Fleas aren't only an itchy, irritating nuisance; they can also transmit parasites and diseases, which can cause severe complications. However, dog owners aren't powerless when fighting against fleas. From grooming your pups with a special shampoo to maintaining a clean home, below are a few of the most effective ways to keep your dogs free of fleas.

How to Keep Fleas Off of Your Dog

1. Set Flea Traps

Flea traps are a safe, effective, and non-toxic way to keep fleas from taking over your home. To implement these, set out a bowl of soapy water near a light source, like a lamp. The heat will and light will naturally attract fleas, leading to them jumping into the bowl. They are then unable to escape.

2. Maintain Your Property

groomingBoth housekeeping and landscaping can prevent flea infestations. For example, raking the leaves and pruning the bushes will limit the flea population outside. This is because fleas like moist, shady, and cool areas. As for keeping them from thriving inside, you should vacuum and wash your pets' bedding regularly. Vacuuming can remove up to 60% of flea eggs and up to 30% of flea larvae from carpeting and bedding.

3. Use Flea Shampoo

Medicated flea shampoo can protect your pups from infestations for about two weeks. Bathing and grooming your dogs twice a month may seem excessive, but it's only necessary during the height of flea season, which is during summer in Kentucky. Throughout the rest of the year, you can use a soothing shampoo to protect their skin from irritation.
