If you’re looking to build the perfect set of tools, high-quality woodworking knives are musts. Of all the different options available, two of the most popular are shaper and moulder knives. These two are often used interchangeably, but there are a few distinctions that set them apart. The guide below outlines how they differ, so you can select the option that suits your needs.

Shaper Knives

To use a shaper knife, you need to have a component called a Mark V. This piece attaches to the table perpendicularly so you can set up the knife in a vertical position and use it to cut your materials. Although you need the Mark V to use the knife, you don’t need a jig.

Once the knife is set up and ready for use, you’ll notice a significant factor that sets the shaper knife apart from other options: The spinning cutter passes the stock. The stock is guided by either a shaper fence or rub collar with a starter pin, which allows you to form profiled edges. This makes shaper knives ideal for creating decorative edges on straight and curved pieces.

Moulder Knives

moulder knivesUnlike shaper knives, moulder knives don’t require a Mark V for use. Instead, they feature a saw attachment, which mounts to a horizontal spindle beneath your worktable. With this option, however, you will need a special jig or accessory for optimal functionality.

Once the knife is set up, you can use it to add decoration to straight work. Examples of this may include picture frames, door and window frame moldings, custom room trims, and surface treatments of furniture components like chair rails. When using this type of knife, keep in mind that it’s only capable of forming profiles in a straight line.
