Getting a large fuel delivery and storing it will cut costs in comparison to small, as-needed deliveries. However, if you aren’t storing your diesel properly, some of that fuel may go to waste before you can use it in your generator, tractor, or other equipment. Here are several tips for maintaining the quality of the fuel while it’s in storage.

How to Properly Store Diesel Fuel

1. Keep It at the Right Temperature

Diesel should be stored at or below 68 degrees Fahrenheit to keep it safe. Temperatures that are too high or low will make the fuel age faster. You’ll know it’s gone bad when it develops a gummy and sediment-filled texture, which will cause problems in the engine.

2. Know How Long It Can Last

When kept at or below the above-mentioned temperature, the fuel can be stored for up to a year while remaining usable and stable. If it’s stored in slightly warmer temperatures, that span can be shortened to as little as six months. To keep tabs on how your fuel is doing, arrange for samples to be taken and tested every three months or so to ensure it’s still viable and not full of sediment.

3. Use a Proper Storage Receptacle

dieselDiesel should be stored in a tank made specifically for fuel. The container shouldn’t have copper, zinc, or metal alloys in it, which will interact with it and make it unstable. If possible, keep the tank full to prevent water and condensation inside, and check that it has a low point where water can be safely drained.

4. Keep It Safe From the Elements

The tank should be protected from wind, snow, and ice to give it a stable environment and consistent temperatures. It should also be safeguarded against aging and wear. Keep the ground around it clear and free from precipitation and debris that can affect its internal temperature, and block all direct sunlight from reaching it.
