Each year, car accident statistics confirm 6 million auto collisions in the United States. To avoid the consequences of driving accidents, follow these tips to keep your loved ones comfortable and safe on your many journeys ahead.

How to Avoid Auto Collisions

1. Get to Know Your Car

Cars have helpful features designed to prevent auto collisions. During driver’s education class, you were probably taught to check your blind spot not only by checking your mirrors but also by looking over your shoulder. If your car is equipped with a blind spot detection device, you’ll see an orange or yellow flash in your mirrors to warn you of an approaching driver. You may also have a rearview camera to see what’s behind you when backing up.

Without these features to rely on, adjust your mirrors and seat for optimal visibility, and test the sensitivity of your brakes. If you know how your car responds when you depress the brakes at different speeds, you’ll be ready to respond to whatever's on the road.

2. Schedule Regular Maintenance

A newer car may have a built-in maintenance reminder system to alert you via the dashboard when its time for service, including oil changes and fluid level checks. If you don’t drive frequently, getting a car serviced every 12 months is a good rule of thumb.

For older cars, without a built-in system, plan your maintenance schedule according to usage. For example, if you make a lot of short trips—five miles or less—you may need more frequent servicing. Refer to your owner’s manual for guidance.

3. Be a Defensive Driver

Be defensive behind the wheel rather than offensive, and limit distractions. Put away your phone, and use it only when you’re off the road and safely parked. Ask passengers to keep the volume down. If you’re using a GPS app, mount your smartphone to maintain focus on the road, or put your co-pilot in charge of navigation. In addition, avoid tailgating. Observe safe following distances—at least three seconds—to avoid rear-end collisions.
