It’s tempting to toss your dog a treat from the dinner table, and in many cases, human foods can be healthy snacks. Some, however, are toxic, which is why it’s important to know what you can’t feed your dog. Diet is just as important as pet vaccinations and other treatments. Use the following guide as one resource to protect your best friend.

4 Dangerous Foods for Dogs

1. Chocolate

Chocolate is incredibly dangerous for dogs to ingest. It contains theobromine and caffeine, which can lead to heart complications, seizures, vomiting, and sudden death. Cocoa powder is the most toxic, while milk chocolate is the least.

If you want to serve your pup a sweet treat, choose a spoonful of peanut butter instead. It’s a good source of protein and healthy fats. Just make sure to serve it in moderation so your dog doesn’t gain weight.

2. Raw Meat

Pet vaccinations protect dogs from many diseases and bacteria, but not all of them. Salmonella and E. coli—which are found in raw meat—can lead to vomiting and other digestive issues, so never serve raw meat. You’ll also be protecting yourself from these bacteria.

Cooked meat, however, is a great treat for your dog. Salmon, chicken, and turkey are packed with protein. Just make sure to remove the bones so your pet won’t choke on them.

3. Avocados

pet vaccinationsAvocados have countless health benefits for humans. Unfortunately, this superfood can create problems for your dog. The compound persin can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and if swallowed, the pit can become lodged in your dog’s digestive tract.

You can serve apples as a safe alternative. This fruit is packed with fiber, which will help with digestion, and the texture will naturally scrub plaque from your dog’s teeth.

4. Onions & Garlic

It’s easy for a few slivers of onion and garlic to fall from the cutting board, and it’s important that you keep your dog away. When ingested, they’ll destroy blood cells, which could lead to anemia. If you serve cooked meat, make sure there aren’t any onion slivers attached, and always check the floor for scraps after cooking.

A healthy snack you can always turn to is carrots. These have a variety of nutrients, and like apples, act as a natural toothbrush.
