Granite countertops will add timeless elegance to your kitchen, contributing to a unique cooking space, as no two slabs of the natural stone are alike. Sealing the porous material every six months to a year, depending on the type of sealant you use and how often you cook and bake, will keep it from absorbing staining agents. To preserve your surface for years, learn how to seal your granite countertops correctly below.

How Do You Seal Granite Countertops?

1.  Clean the Surface

Take everything off your countertops, including appliances, so you have a clear space to work with. Then, create a non-abrasive cleaning mixture by pouring two tablespoons of isopropyl alcohol, one teaspoon of liquid dish detergent, and cool water into a pint-size spray bottle. Spray the mixture on the granite and clean your countertops using circular motions and a microfiber cloth. Finally, allow the surface to dry completely.

2.  Apply Sealant

Also, open your windows and turn on the ventilation system in your kitchen to reduce fumes. If you've never used the product before, test it on a small area of your countertops to avoid discoloration issues. Finally, ensure you apply the product evenly by removing any air bubbles with clean rags.

3. Let the Product Absorb

Allow the sealer to penetrate the granite countertops for 15 to 20 minutes, or as recommended. Keep in mind that prolonged absorption can cause discoloration. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to remove the excess afterward, and apply a second coat if the instructions call for it. Repeat the process and let the countertops cure for 24 to 48 hours as per the directions before using them.
