Traveling by air often saves time, but packing and making sure you have everything can be stressful. As you get ready for a business trip or family vacation, there are several things you should double-check before heading to the airport. Use the following airport transportation guide to ensure you don’t forget anything and that your trip goes smoothly.

What to Do Before Leaving for the Airport

1. Measure Weight & Dimensions of Luggage

Check your airline’s maximum dimensions and weight for carry-on luggage. Then, use a tape measure to make sure your bags will fit into the overhead compartment or beneath the seat in front of you.

If you are checking a bag, weigh it to prevent oversized luggage fees at the airport. Generally, your airline won’t charge for bags that weigh less than 50 pounds, but check their website before you leave for the airport.

2. Have Current IDs & Credit Cards

A few weeks before your trip, check your ID to make sure it’s valid. If it’s near or past the expiration date, you’ll have enough time to go to the DMV.

Make sure your credit cards are current and order any renewals from your bank, if necessary. Also, some banks screen purchases for fraud; you might need to call and let them know that you are traveling.

3. Get Your Boarding Passes

airport transportationMany airlines allow you to check in and print your boarding pass before you get to the airport. Some even have apps that let you use a digital version instead.

Print your boarding pass and download it to your phone. Having both copies will ensure you can still board your flight even if you lose the physical one or if your phone dies at the gate.

4. Arrange Airport Transportation

Arrange for someone to pick you up from your final destination. If you have an available friend or family member, ask them to get you from the airport and say your thanks by treating them to lunch.

If everyone is busy or you’re traveling somewhere new, contact a shuttle or taxi service. Book the reservation for about 45 minutes to an hour after your scheduled arrival time, which will give you enough time to deplane, collect your bags, and meet your shuttle service outside of the terminal.
