Nail trimming is an essential part of the pet grooming process, preventing damage to indoor materials and allowing them to run without hurting themselves. However, if your dog is easily scared or doesn’t like their paws touched, performing the task can be difficult. Consider the following tips to help them feel safe and fully relax.

How to Trim Your Dog’s Nails

1. Start Early

Strange, shiny objects can be scary for your pet. Familiarize your dog with the clippers; gently touch them to the tips of your dog’s toes and let them sniff the material. Be sure to offer a reward after each session so that they are incentivized to learn more.

2. Use Food

If your dog has trouble sitting still, fill a spoon with peanut butter and set it on the floor. Sit next to them while they’re enjoying the treat and place the clippers within their line of sight. Softly touch their toes with your fingers and squeeze the clippers, so your dog hears the sound it makes.

3. Stay Firm

Place the clippers along the end of their toenail and snip it off. Watch out for the quick, which is the pink area near the back of their toe that contains blood vessels.

4. Move Slow

If you can only get through one foot before they start pulling away, then it’s time for a break. Let them run around and play for a bit before calling them back. Continue cutting the nails for as long as they’ll allow. Repeat until the toes are trimmed evenly.
