Your vehicle is a significant investment, and if you want it to last for years, you should learn to recognize when something is wrong. This is especially true when it comes to the transmission; if it fails, your vehicle won’t operate. Here are some common signs that your car may need transmission repairs, so you can take action.

4 Signs Your Vehicle Needs Transmission Repair

1. Fluid Leak

A leak will leave red puddles on the ground beneath your vehicle. If you notice these puddles, check the fluid level while the engine is warm to confirm if there’s a leak.

The dipstick for the transmission fluid reservoir is near the rear of the engine where the transmission and transaxle come together. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it, and reinsert it just as you would to check the vehicle’s motor oil.

If you have a leak, an auto repair technician may need to replace the seals or gaskets in your engine, install a new bell housing, or examine other components that may be damaged.

2. Strong Odors

Over time, the transmission fluid will become contaminated with dirt and grime, so it won’t be able to properly lubricate the system. The resulting friction leads to overheating and a strong, sweet or tart smell.

Avoid this by having the transmission fluid changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. If you do notice the odor, get your car serviced as soon as possible.

Transmission Repair3. Warning Light

The transmission warning light will activate if the fluid level is low, which indicates the fluid is either leaking or burning. If you delay getting the vehicle serviced, you won’t be able to accelerate the vehicle or shift gears.

4. Strange Noises

A problem with the transmission will cause unusual noises as you drive the vehicle, like a buzzing or high-pitched whining. These sounds may indicate the transmission synchronizer should be adjusted or replaced.
