Your feet endure significant stress every day, and over time, the workload can be too much. It’s imperative that you properly care for your feet. Injuries can linger for months, and general discomfort can make daily activities grueling. Following an approved foot care regimen is a useful place to start, and you can use the guide below to begin.

A Foot Care How-To Guide

1. Choose the Right Shoes

To keep your feet healthy and strong, choose shoes for comfort and support. The heel should fit snugly, and the toes shouldn’t feel cramped or compressed. Stand, walk, and jog in them. Your foot shouldn't move around inside a shoe. Try on both the left and right shoe, and shop in the afternoon when your feet have expanded. If you have flat feet, high arches, or can’t find the right pair, speak with a foot care specialist about custom orthotics.

2. Keep Them Dry

Moisture can lead to fungal infections like athlete’s foot. It may also cause feet to slip. When skin rubs against a shoe or sock, blisters form. Dry your feet immediately after they’ve become wet. Put on a new pair of socks, and if the shoes are soaked, choose a different pair.

3. Keep Them Clean

foot careYou should wash your feet every day to remove dirt, debris, and bacteria. Scrub them with a washcloth, warm water, and mild soap. Too much soaking, however, can remove the natural oils from your skin. Protect the skin with a podiatrist-approved moisturizer or petroleum jelly.

In addition, keep socks and shoes clean. Never wear the same socks twice, and rotate your shoes each day. To avoid cutting the skin, trim toenails straight across, and scrub them with a nail brush to remove dirt and bacteria.

4. Exercise

Foot exercises, which strengthen muscles and reduce inflammation, can relieve and prevent pain after a long day. Start by curling your toes under and then flexing them up, holding each position for five seconds. Rolling a tennis ball under your feet while spreading your toes increases muscle control and reduces tension.

If you experience sharp pains while exercising your feet, schedule a foot care exam. You may have an undetected injury that requires rest and professional care.
