It can be troubling if your cat suddenly seems disinterested in their food. There are many potential causes for this change in behavior, some of which are easily treatable. While taking your feline friend to a veterinarian is recommended, you may be able to identify the problem and fix it at home. Here are a few potential reasons your cat may have stopped eating.

Why Won’t Your Cat Eat?

1. Pickiness

If you've recently changed your cat’s food or the food has a new ingredient, they may not like it. This can be easily fixed by changing up their food again. The food should be at an appetizing temperature, not expired or stale, and presented in a clean bowl to help make it appealing for them.

2. Indigestion

If your cat has eaten something they shouldn’t have, it could cause a blockage in their stomach and make it hard to eat and digest. Just like humans, the results of food poisoning for cats can be diarrhea and vomiting. They might even cough up a hairball. Fortunately, indigestion is usually temporary. If these symptoms persist for longer than 24 hours, consult with a veterinarian.

3. Pain

veterinarianDental issues can make it difficult to eat. Cats can develop tooth abscesses, inflamed gums, and other painful afflictions.

Your cat may also experience some back pain, especially as they age. Spinal injuries can make it harder to bend down to eat. A veterinarian can help you to treat both of these issues and manage your cat’s pain.

4. Disease

In some cases, not eating can be a sign that your cat has a disease that needs to be treated. Kidney disease, cancer, pancreatitis, colitis, and other respiratory and digestive diseases can all result in nausea or the digestive system not working as it should. Some issues can be treated with a simple round of antibiotics, while others require a more long-term care process. A veterinarian will help you diagnose your cat and determine the next steps.
