If you’re moving or must downsize temporarily, you may need to store your electronics. Storage containers are excellent resources for housing items you aren’t using, but still want to keep. When you properly prepare electronics with the below steps, they can stay safe in these units for a considerable time.

A Guide to Storing Electronics in Storage Containers

1. Back Up Files

With proper storage, your electronics should retain all of their data, so they’re ready for use upon removal. However, some systems—especially older electronics—are unpredictable. To adequately safeguard your data assets, make sure you back up your files first, either using a cloud drive or a hard drive you’ll keep elsewhere.

2. Organize Wires

To minimize the risk of damage to the ports during transport and storage, remove any adapters, connectors, or other wires from your devices. Take photos of which connectors pair with which system, and gently wind the cables up to prevent tangling. You may want to bag each cord individually and include a note to indicate which device it supports.

3. Clean Any Dust

4. Remove Batteries

Generally, batteries should never go into storage. When not in use, batteries are prone to leakage, which could lead to irreparable damage within your devices. Therefore, you should remove them from your electronics whenever you store them. Don’t forget to take them out of small appliances, such as remotes, too.

5. Use the Right Wrap

To prepare your electronics for transport and storage, package them with a protective covering. If you still have the original box and foam packaging, consider using that. Otherwise, use static-free bubble wrap to protect your devices, and include a silica gel pack to prevent moisture.
